About Camilla Bates

Travel is in my blood. The youngest daughter of a New Zealander mother and an American father, I grew up in Sydney, Australia, where my parents owned an art gallery that showcased Asia and the Pacific. We traveled frequently, often to remote locations, as they acquired pieces for their business as well as their own private collection. Because my father was also an art historian, we would invariably find ourselves at archaeological digs or other wonderful places steeped in ancient culture and tradition. This instilled in me a passion for adventure. By age fourteen, I was living in India and attending an international boarding school in the foothills of the Himalayas.

From there, my life’s journey brought me to New York via London, Singapore and Miami. My first boss had an island in Vanuatu, where she ran a boutique luxury resort. I looked after her guests’ itineraries, which spanned the shipwrecks of the Solomon Islands to the Mother Temple on the slopes of Bali’s Mount Agung. I subsequently moved to an agency that specialized in entertainment travel. I worked with internationally acclaimed bands, orchestras and television and film crews who toured anywhere from three months to three years. My clients trusted me to protect their privacy, ensure their safety and provide seamless and meticulously detailed travel arrangements.

Eventually, I got into the luxury hotel business, where I learned that genuine hospitality, personal attention and creativity are the hallmarks of a spectacular experience. During those years, I married, settled in New York, raised three children and discovered firsthand the joy of family travel: seeing the world through the eyes of curious and fearless children.

The Reef, filmed at Ningaloo Reef on Australia’s west coast, is a performance in film and live music by the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Later, my husband and I co-founded Strategic Vision, Inc., a global marketing consultancy firm. I also joined the U.S. board of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, one of my country’s finest cultural exports and a wonder of the musical world today.

I came full circle in 2012. The contacts that I had made over the years and my desire to share my expertise with others led me to planning vacations for friends. I decided to embrace my vocation and partner with Valerie Wilson Travel, one of the largest private, women-owned, family-managed travel consulting firms in the United States. Having access to the resources of Valerie Wilson Travel, a Virtuoso agency, combined with my extensive experience, allows me to plan the most remarkable trips for my clients.

In 2020, I was inspired to create a platform to communicate with current and future clients and get them dreaming about travel again. Welcome to Near or Far.
